Queen’s U Hosts First Virtual Homecoming
Queen’s University needed to take one of its most beloved traditions virtual: Homecoming.
With in-person events cancelled in October 2020, Queen’s looked to Proof Experiences to create a memorable, new online experience that would reimagine the spirit and the stories that annually unite Queen’s alumni.
Our Virtual Event Solution
Our opportunity was to welcome alumni from around the world – many of whom had never experienced a Homecoming since they graduated. Alumni were invited to participate in a collective online experience, complete with content curated to connect with alumni.
The Saturday afternoon event was co-hosted by CBC broadcaster and Queen’s alumni Shelagh Rogers along with the head of the Alumni Association, Rico Garcia. Together they hosted over two hours of engaging content – from a Tribute to the 50-year-plus “Tricolour Guard” alumni to a look back at the “Greatest Gaels Sports Highlights” to a tour of the award-winning art gallery (and its four Rembrandts!) to musical interludes from the Queen’s Bands to memorable local performers like “Smitty Kingston”. The highlight was the constant “chat”, shared stories and 1:1 networking.
The history of the Tragically Hip band is part of Queen’s history, so Gord Sinclair was invited to perform from his new album, on the anniversary of Gord Downie’s death – the highlight of the virtual event.
More than 2,000 alumni registered from around the world, from Munich to Malaysia to Manitoba. Engagement was high with lively commentary contributions throughout the event – from alumni stories to speaker questions to rave reviews.
